Women in the Golf Industry

These days fewer and fewer people make the effort to play golf. This trend is causing golf courses across the country to close and be converted to courses or sold to developers to build apartment complexes or housing communities on the land. I wonder, what is causing this decline for the love of the game? Golf generally only takes about 4 hours or more to play 18 holes, and people use the excuse that they are too busy for that. They have families and jobs where they work overtime (sometimes even on weekends), and they say business is rarely done on the golf course. So who is going to save the game and augment the once popular sport? The answer is female! Women need to get involved in golf so they can spend time with their men and friends and have fun! The golf industry, and society in general, has not yet realized this need. The industry is making it difficult for women to get involved in the sport instead of trying to capitalize on or encourage the need.

For example, I walked into a golf shop the other day and they only had men’s products: men’s shirts, pants, shoes, and hats. I asked the guy working, “Do you have anything here for women?” He said “we have women’s gloves”. So at least they knew that women would need a glove to play golf.

Currently, the industry is promoting women in golf by encouraging the younger generation to get involved. They provide day golf camps, Girls Golf LPGA, and junior leagues for kids to develop a passion for the game, hoping they will carry it into adulthood. But it only stops there, they don’t extend the sport to young adults and women. They just hope those girls grow up and still want to participate. But there is little to no encouragement for women to get involved after the youth camps are over. Maybe they think the next generation will just create something. Well, as you can see, it hasn’t.

Golf is a great way for people to spend time together, whether it’s with friends and family, or even as a way for strangers to get to know each other. This sport seems to segregate men and women. It has turned into women golfing in groups with other women and men golfing with other men, and it has created a divide in the sport. For example, when I go on vacation with other couples, the guys want to play golf and the girls want to go shopping or just lie on the beach. As a female golfer, I am torn between spending time with my friends and golf, the game I love. If I play with guys, they feel like I’m invading their guys’ time, so it’s not very attractive and I can’t spend time with my friends. There are hardly any incentives or incentives for women to play and they do not feel welcome. There is still time to change this habit and bring this exciting sport back to life, and I believe that women are going to make a difference.
