More than just music and acrobatics: a corporate social responsibility

Despite the fact that the primary focus of the Vans Warped Tour is to put on great music for the people, raising awareness about environmental issues has also been an equally important priority for them. Vans Warped Tour launched a Warped green initiative that made it the most environmentally friendly event in North America. With the initiative, Vans Warped Tour switched to biodiesel to power its tour buses and production trucks. Having over 17 tour buses and about 19 production trucks touring the US for two months was a lot of fuel. Having converted to biodiesel, Vans Warped Tour significantly reduced traditional fuel use and therefore reduced a large amount of pollution. By using a renewable resource like biodiesel, Vans Warped Tour demonstrated the fact that biodiesel can be used on a regular basis and yet meet essential efficiency requirements.

Everyone involved in the Vans Warped Tour propagates and encourages following the three R’s of Restoration:

A. Reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources.

B. Reuse existing items before throwing them away.

C. Recycle products and items.

Warped Eco-Initiative has become a cult movement that has greatly inspired young people to take the first step in restoring the beauty of planet earth. The youngsters have been too nervous to champion the cause and make a bid for the big change. And it’s not that the Vans Warped Tour doesn’t have incentives in store for them: volunteers get free access to the tour and are given a host of freebies like t-shirts, hats, souvenirs and many other items.

Vans Warped Tour believes in giving back to society. In the open environment, the tour builds stalls where you can find a number of vendors who address socially relevant causes. Vendors constitute environmental rights activists, civil rights activists, and even anti-racism organizations. Leaving these aside, a number of charities like Teen Suicides, National Hope Line Network and many more are also set up on the tour. In fact, a tent by the name of ‘Girl Garage’ addresses the issues in an innovative way. Fans who visit the tent are asked to design their jerseys and bid on Vans shoes. All proceeds from the sale of shirts and shoes go to the Suicide Charity Trusts.

The Vans Warped Tour also contributes to causes like the American Red Cross, Cancer Care, and even AIDS research centers. In fact, with every 4 ticket sales on the tour, $1 is credited to ‘Camp Hollywood Heart’, an institution that cares for families affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2005, the tour contributed more than $250,000 to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. But money is not just how they contribute/donate, many times, tour artists come together and supply prefab homes to families in need.
