DID YOU KNOW THAT…

Miss Yugoslavia, Bernard Marovt, who had half-naked photos published in a Yugoslav magazine, was able to participate in Miss World 1983. The Yugoslav Bernad Marovt was the favorite along with other names such as Misses United Kingdom (Sarah-Jane Hutt), United States (Lisa Allred) and Jamaica (Catherine Levy).

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

Miss Guyana-World 1967, Shakira Baksh, is currently married to renowned British actor Michael Caine, who won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (1986 and 1999).
On November 16, 1967, Shakira Baksh was second runner-up at Miss World in London, England. One of the great favorites of the press and the public, from the beginning, was Shakira Baksh from Guyana.
Miss Guyana-World 1967 is considered by experts as one of the most beautiful misses of all time.

Miss Colombia-World 1984, Angela Patricia Janiot Martirena, qualified for the semifinals of Miss World 1984. When the presenter Peter Marshall asked her this question, “Do you admire anyone in the United Kingdom?”, Patricia Janiot replied: “My my idol is Boy George, I would like to meet the singer Boy George”. Certainly, she loved listening and dancing to Boy George songs like “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?”, “Karma Chameleon” and “Church Of The Poisonous Mind”.
Miss World 1984 was an event that changed her life and opened the doors to numerous projects. Currently Patricia Janiot is one of the most recognized journalists in Latin America, since 1992 she is a news anchor for Cable News Network (CNN), she was nominated for an Emmy Award.

The Swedish beauty pageant industry has been languishing since 1990. Sweden’s participation in Miss World started well. Sweden won Miss World two years in a row (1951 and 1952). In 1977, Miss Sweden, Mary Stavin, was elected Miss World.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

On November 18, 1976, Cinthya “Cindy” Jean Breakspeare from Jamaica became the first naturalized citizen to be crowned Miss World. Cindy was born in Toronto, Canada.
After her reign, she married famous singer-songwriter Robert “Bob” Nesta Marley. Her famous song “Is This Love” was written by Bob Marley inspired by the romance of Miss World 1976.
Like Marlene Ottey (athlete) and Grace Jones (singer, supermodel and actress), Cindy Breakspeare is a hero in Jamaica, a former British colony in the Caribbean.

Miss Venezuela, Carmen Susana Duijm Zubillaga, was crowned Miss World 1955. She traveled to London, being the first time that Venezuela would compete and won. She became the first Latin American woman to win the title. Her title was celebrated by Venezuelans.

Miss Bombay and Miss India 1966, Reita Faria, was crowned Miss World 1966, after her reign has been a judge several times in the Miss World pageant.

On November 7, 1963, Miss Liberia, Ethel Zoe Norman, became the first black woman to reach the semifinals of Miss World. It was the first time in history that Liberia was placed in Miss World.
In 1983, Miss Liberia-World, Annie Broderick, was elected “Miss Africa-World”.
On December 4, 1999, Miss Liberia, Sebah Esther Tubman, was fourth runner-up in the Miss World pageant.
Since 1980, Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Miss Chile, Margot Montt, was one of the favorites in Miss World 1986. Miss Chile-World, however, was not a semifinalist in the Miss World contest.

Like Georgina Rizk (Miss Lebanon-World 1970 and Miss Universe 1971) and Angela Vissers (Miss Netherlands-World 1988 and Miss Universe 1989), Miss Botswana-World, Mpule Kwelagobe, did not even reach the semifinals of Miss World 1997. but she won the Miss Universe pageant in 1999.

The president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo Manrique, was one of the first to congratulate the new Miss World 2004. Her name: María Julia “Maju” Mantilla García, who was born in Trujillo, Peru.

On November 21, 1970, for the first time a black woman was crowned Miss World. Her name: Jennifer Josephine Hosten from Grenada, a small island in the Caribbean. Since the nobody from Granada has been a semifinalist.
In 1971, Miss US Virgin Islands Cherry Raphaelia Creque said, “I started to believe that black people have a chance in beauty pageants when a black girl won Miss World last year.”

Lissette Diaz became the third Hispanic woman to be crowned Miss USA-World (2005). Ms. Diaz was also the first naturalized citizen to be crowned Miss USA-World Lissette Diaz was born in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Unfortunately, Colombia has never won the Miss World pageant. On November 15, 1979, Miss Bermuda, Gina Ann Cassandra Swainson, was elected Miss World in London, England. Coming into the final, the overwhelming favorite among the international press and beauty experts was Miss Bermuda, who was 1st runner-up at Miss Universe 1979. She was smart, charismatic, beautiful, and elegant. It was the first time that Bermuda, a small island in the Caribbean, was a semi-finalist and won. Since Gina’s win, Bermuda has had only 1 semi-finalist in 1980.

Japan, Italy, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, Mexico, South Korea and the Philippines have never won the Miss World pageant.
