Main Holiday Destinations 2010 – Part 1

Recently, an overwhelming number of vacation destination lists for 2010 were published. While I like to consider myself a somewhat adventurous traveler, I found some of these destinations downright silly; especially when taking into consideration specific political scenarios, as well as health-related situations. At the end of any vacation day, I would like my personal health and safety to be intact. The following list of travel destinations combines a bit of common sense with a bit of memory scanning and just the right touch of adventure, making for a fantastic vacation in my opinion.

Antarctica

The 20th anniversary of commercial tourism within Antarctica will be marked in 2010, and it may be the last time this wilderness is as easily accessible to visitors as it is today. Starting in 2011, the number of travelers allowed on the mainland will be reduced by 50 percent in an attempt to limit the environmental impact of these tourist excursions.

Basque Country, France and Spain

With some of the most incredible scenery you’ll ever see, both France and Spain have continually been favorite holiday destinations in Europe. In particular, the Basque coast is an area of special beauty. Add in the availability of some pretty amazing travel packages to this beautiful area of the world, which still allow you to save some cash for souvenirs and you have a combination that is hard to resist.

bay of fire, tasmania

Chances are you’ve never heard of this little paradise, but with crystal clear waters, clean, sandy beaches, and cozy cottages for rent along the shoreline, it has a lot to offer. Located off the coast of St. Helen’s, a small whaling town in the less traveled part of Tasmania, this little-known holiday spot is sure to offer an idyllic island getaway.

Cape Town, South Africa

In an effort to prepare for its moment in the limelight, the host of the 2010 World Cup has spent the last few years preparing a host of new stadiums, as well as a great selection of new hotels and restaurants; And let’s not forget Cape Town’s additional attractions: beautiful beaches, up-and-coming vineyards, chic nightlife and a laid-back atmosphere.

Copenhagen, Denmark

While Denmark’s capital rarely gets the attention it deserves, it really does have a lot to offer, including comprehensive cycle paths, free bikes, and a new metro line in the works. There is also a host of new public buildings: an opera house, a state-of-the-art library and concert hall, as well as an environmental program that is making the rest of Europe green with envy. Another advantage of this destination is that the residents are regularly rated as some of the happiest people in the world.

Scilly Isles, England

Known as the Isles of Scilly, or simply Scilly, England’s smallest official “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” stretches out over the Atlantic 28 miles southwest of Land’s End. The archipelago is fringed by beaches of soft, pale sand and has the exotic appeal of a faraway holiday paradise, an impression enhanced by the mild, frost-free climate and colorful subtropical plants.

Koh Tao, Thailand

If you love the ocean and the idea of experiencing it a bit while enjoying the resort amenities, then this is the place for you. Throw in endless green scenery, incredible snorkeling spots, and the chance to experience both the island’s marine and wildlife life, and it’s no wonder this spot made the 2010 Top Destinations list.

This is by no means the complete list of vacation destinations that this beautiful planet has to offer. In Part 2 of the Best Vacation Destinations 2010 we will continue to explore additional vacation options located around the world.
