Journey Beyond Affection: Titanic (A Marxist Critique)

Lifetime savings, pennies, dimes and quarters? Would you bet everything you have in exchange for a trip on one of the most luxurious ships of the moment? If you had the opportunity to travel on the “Unsinkable Ship”, would you give it all up? In the movie Titanic, written and directed by James Cameron, a true story that took place in 1912, social differences were evident. In fact, this movie serves as a representation of the class divide during that time. Resulting in different treatment of first, second and third class people that determined who survived and perished.

“I don’t see what all the fuss is about. It doesn’t look any bigger than the Mauritania.” “Jack, you’re a pazzo. You bet everything we have.” “When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose”. The movie starts in the present day, where a captain was searching for the “Heart of the Ocean”, instead they found a painting of a passenger, who was named Rose, who was still alive at this time and she was the one who did it. She told them what happened in “The Ship of Dreams”. It all started when Jack bet everything he had on tickets to ride the Titanic and Rose rode him with first class tickets without any emotion showing from her. Even Rose was engaged and part of the first class people and Jack was in third class, a form of affection grew between them in a short period of time. Unfortunately, the ship made contact with an iceberg causing her to gradually sink as well, lifeboats were prepared but could only attend to half of the passengers. As a result, the first class passengers, women and children, were the first to get on them, they were the priority, and the lower class did not have a chance to survive due to class conflicts. In the end, the Titanic sank to the bottom of the ocean, resulting in the deaths of half of the passengers she was serving.

Taking into account the Marxist approach, James Cameron has taken into account the social differences experienced by the passengers of the Titanic. Unfair treatment was shown as first class people could travel freely on the ship and were provided with the best facilities, middle class people had fewer privileges but enjoyed the same comforts, while third class people were they were forced to stay in the lower part of the ship and were not allowed to make contact with people of higher class. The survival and death of the passengers depended on the class they were in. If only third class passengers were in first class, they would have a chance to survive and have priority to travel in the lifeboats. Furthermore, they would have been better treated and enjoyed the same facilities as those in the higher classes. There was a clear demonstration of class conflict in the movie Titanic, specifically when classes are separated and treated differently, chances of survival were determined by class given that only 3% of first class passengers drowned compared to 16% of the second. -class and the highest of all, 45% of the third class.

Titanic, in general, was an exceptional film. It successfully showed the class conflicts during that time and event. Given the time in which it was made, great cinematography, music, blockades and artists were generated that were points in favor for the making of the film. The plot sequence transitioned well and the literary device used, the flashback, was effective. The actors, main and secondary, gave a tremendous interpretation of their roles that brought the characters they played to life. The theme song or ending song of the movie, “My Heart Will Go On” gave the movie justice and hit the hearts of the viewers, it was also a great conclusion of the movie that despite everything that happened, everyone must learn to move. and know that life will always go on. Like Rose in the movie, would you finally release everything or would you hold on to the burden of the past forever?
