Let’s face it, most dogs enjoy digging. Allowing this behavior from time to time is healthy for your dog. There is a difference though, when you let him express his nature and let him run wild through the yard and gardens. If you noticed that your dog loves to dig, it will take some effort to correct the problem in the right way.

If you haven’t adopted a dog yet, you should consider staying away from Nordic breeds and terriers. Not to say these breeds aren’t obedient, they just enjoy digging more than most dogs. Dogs like Malamutes and Huskies for examples of Nordic breeds, and terrier means “going down to earth.”

If your dog is constantly digging and destructive to gardens and yards, you may not be exercising him enough. If your dog doesn’t get at least 40-45 minutes. of walking per day, you may be digging in to discharge some of that pent-up energy.

Boredom can also be a contributing factor. If your dog has nothing to do, he may feel empty, and digging is a perfect way to give himself a sense of purpose. You can give your dog some chew toys when you are out and do your best to exhaust him before going anywhere.

Dogs may also be digging due to separation anxiety. This is a common psychological problem in dogs. It’s quite a complex issue, so we’ll just point out the fact that it can be a problem. Your dog may be digging just to get your attention.

If you have a dog who loves to dig, you may just need to supervise him while he’s out in the yard. This is probably the best method to prevent a dog from digging. They can’t dig if they always stop when they start. I realize that not everyone is going to constantly supervise their dog while they are out in the yard. If your dog just has to dig, it’s not fair to deny it completely, so what you can do is designate a spot or build a sandbox.

If you build a sandbox, fill it half with dirt and half with sand. Make it deep enough to keep your dog busy. Set this part of the yard or sandbox as the digging site. Once your dog is interested, clarify the boundaries for him. If he digs in the box, praise him enthusiastically; if he digs anywhere other than the box, tell him “No!” immediately. Help him back into the box, and then immediately praise him.
