How to record an Xbox 360 backup

While there’s a stigma attached to backing up games, backing up video games that cost more than $ 60 isn’t just practical, it’s easy. Let’s face it, records get scratched, broken, chipped, and just missing. Should we be forced to invest again for a few careless seconds? I say no and with today’s homebrew community moving forward to make custom software run on burnt media possible, it is not necessary. While I won’t go into how to back up games with this article, I will go over the steps required to back up once you have an .ISO file.

First, you will need to modify your Xbox 360 to run homebrew software. Doing this is not as overwhelming as it sounds, but it will void the warranty. If this is a problem for you, maybe you should give GameFly a try. If this is not an issue for you, go to XboxScene for more information on how to make this happen. Once you’ve tweaked your Xbox 360 and obtained an .ISO file, it’s time to get started. You want to make sure that you are using quality recording media. For 360 games, you will need double-layer DVDs. These are not the same as DVD-R or DVD + R and you will need to make sure they say DVD-DL. I’ve always found Verbatim to be top-notch and haven’t seen any fail me yet. Although I have not had any problems with Memorex either. I’ve heard reports of people burning roller coaster after roller coaster and failing to archive discs before. The next step is to download the Imgburn program. Visit imgburn.com or do a quick Google search for imgburn to get this amazing free software. Once installed, you need to go into settings and change the Layer Break setting to L0 = 1913760. What it does is tell the program where to create the Layer Break on disk. This layer break is the area that the Xbox 360 checks to make sure a disc is authentic. Changing the layer break to 1913760 creates this authenticity. Nice!

From this point on, navigation is pretty smooth. Open the file you want to back up, or the .dvd file if one is available. Set the recording speed of the disc you are using to less than its maximum capacity. Some people say this is not necessary, but I have always left it as slow as I can handle (usually 2.4x) and have never had a bad disc recording. Leaving your discs at 8x or better may or may not work for you, I just know I don’t want to drop my disc and it won’t work and have to wait for the recording again. Your disc is now ready to be burned, but just to be safe, check that your Layer Break setting is correct and click burn.
