How to Heal After Domestic Violence

Domestic violence, by definition, involves physical and generally verbal abuse by one party against the other in a romantic relationship. In many countries, domestic violence is a crime, but in a few countries it is not. Algeria, Burkina Faso, Latvia and the Russian Federation are some of the countries where it is not a crime. Domestic violence takes place among the poor, the middle class, and the rich. It is carried out and inflicted on both the educated and the uneducated. However, whether it is a crime or not, anyone who has left an abusive relationship will have to heal. The following are some suggestions to help in this process.

Watch a comedy movie

This can be challenging at first, and more so if you’ve spent many years caring for the abusive partner’s needs and wants. However, you can take care of yourself. Therefore, you can take care of yourself by taking time to watch a comedy movie at home. After choosing a movie that you and no one else want to see, sit down with or without food and watch the movie without interruption.

As you look at it, when your funny bone is tickled, laugh out loud, but be careful, your laugh can turn to tears and that’s okay. Cry, if necessary, it will also help you.

Plant a garden

Plant a garden if you have access to some land, but if you don’t have access to land, but access to an area where gardening pots can be placed, use them instead. Plant a flower, fruit, and vegetable, or whatever garden you would like to have. It doesn’t have to be a big garden, or a small one, just one that you will be happy with.

This activity can help calm your thoughts and feelings, and sometimes after gardening, you may even walk away with answers to questions that have been troubling you.

Go on vacation

This is a major one and you may not be able to do it right away. If money is not an issue, other obligations such as work, children’s schooling, etc. it can affect you. So whenever possible, take a vacation. You can visit a country that you have always wanted to visit or you can revisit a place that you liked to visit. On the other hand, vacations do not have to be in another country, they can be a “vacation at home”, as some would say. That is, on vacation in the country where you live.

No matter where you go, what matters is that you escape for at least three days and allow yourself to enjoy this vacation.

Those who will edify you

Stay and stay close to those who would build you up and not tear you down. Of course this is self explanatory, but it may be easier said than done. However, it can be done, but sometimes it will take time.

Spend time with those who want and are trying to build you up and not bring you down. Don’t put off spending time with them. Talk to them on the phone, on a computer, and definitely in person.

Take time

Don’t force healing. They all heal at their own pace, so don’t compare yourself to others. The healing process for one person may take a year, while for another it may take five years, but what matters is that you heal, so keep healing. Heal at your own pace.

A victim of domestic violence does not need anyone to tell her how the spirit, soul, and body can crush such violence. Therefore, healing after getting out of such situation is necessary.

Watch a comedy movie, plant a garden, go on vacation, surround yourself with those who would strengthen you and give you time to heal.
