Those who have diabetes want others to know that they are not defined by their disease, but simply have the disease. Those with cancers are not known as “cancerous” and those with other problems are not known for their disease.

It basically comes down to the fact that many people who have diabetes find the term “diabetic” very offensive when used in reference to a person. In order not to offend diabetics living in today’s world, it is best to avoid using this word when referring to them. Remember, you are a person who has the disease of diabetes, you are not just a diabetic.
