Is Google’s Chromebook worth it?

Introducing the new Google Chromebooks. Released in June 2011, the Chromebook is Google’s attempt to provide users with an incredibly fast, easy-to-use, low-maintenance machine.

First, let’s talk a bit about the main key features:

Boot up in less than 10 seconds. Tired of waiting for your old laptop or desktop to finish booting up and turning on? Even two minutes while waiting for your PC to start up can be quite annoying. The Chromebook’s extra-fast boot-up time means no more waiting, and some people will be “less annoyed.”

All applications and programs are updated automatically. No more trying to figure out which apps need to be updated, no more trying to figure out if an update caused another program to stop working. The Chromebook checks for updates and installations for all programs automatically. You will never see another popup saying “please install update x.xx”

8.5 hours of continuous battery life. The Chromebook will last that entire flight to London. You don’t need to constantly worry about recharging or losing battery power. 8.5 hours is a LOT of battery life. The battery maintains 80% of its original charge for up to 1,000 charges. That’s 3 times more than a normal laptop battery. wow.

Chromebook comes in 3G or wireless. At the time of this writing, the wireless version is not yet available. However, you can get 3G right now. I’m not sure which one I would prefer. I might opt for wireless since I travel a lot, but 3G is tempting since I’ll never need to locate a wireless signal to use it.

Other things I should mention:

It is not the lightest model on the market. At 3.3 pounds, it’s still very light, but not as light as the latest Macs. The Chromebook is designed for everyday use. Watch videos on YouTube, browse the web, access Facebook, view photos, send emails, play cool online games and watch videos. Pretty much your everyday stuff. It is NOT designed for serious gamers or digital media specialists.

So should you buy it? Well, if all you do is surf the web, use Facebook, and watch YouTube videos, great, this could be the perfect laptop for you. If you need a highly performance-optimized machine for audio or video editing, you may want to go for something a bit more powerful with more customization features.
