Since the beginning of time, people from all countries have invented their own deities and myths. These legends were often passed down through the generations, until the invention of the written word. Once the written word was invented, it became much easier for people to keep track of their deities and the many heroes who went on quests, and mythology became much more interesting and personal to all societies. Gods took on their own personalities and agendas, heroes went on epic quests, and from the minds of authors, entire worlds were invented. Myth and legend had been linked to life in the days of yore and to this day they still play a very important role in society.

In fact, the days of the week are named after the Norse gods, each of whom had a day dedicated to them, although not many people today know this. The creatures that modern society has come to love, such as dragons, werewolves, fairies, and even vampires, originated from multiple legends and myths. Mythology has also played a role in politics and even some of the spoken phrases we use. Many video games and movies owe their backstories to creatures or figures that come directly from ancient texts.

Religion even grew out of legends. People needed to believe that there was someone, some omnipotent beings, who created the world and everything in it. Therefore, the gods were born. All of our modern religions bear very close similarities to the deities invented by ancient cultures. Although it has evolved in the same way as all thoughts and dreams, all of our religions contain somewhat modern twists on ancient mythology.

We have even named our vehicles, some of our cities, planets, plants, animals, and some bodies of water after mythological creatures or deities. Pets are commonly named after mythological gods, and that trend has begun to affect how we name our children, too. Even some of our most commonly used words, like “satire,” are simply rewritten words taken from mythological texts. Some musicians include mythological references in their lyrics or song titles, and we still teach ancient religion in school. Although most people probably don’t realize it, society is heavily influenced by ancient society and legends that were created and passed down for thousands of years.
