free-entertainment

The weather is turning sunny and warm and the children are taking a break from school. It’s time to relax and have fun. Free.

city parks

If you’re looking for things to do that are free, there are actually quite a few, but I’ll start with what’s nearby and plentiful: a city park. Save time and effort, but have a lot of fun.

There’s no denying that city parks aren’t exactly free because they’re the result of our taxes. However, with that said, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised at how well our taxes are sometimes spent.

City parks may have benches, picnic tables, swimming pools, playgrounds, grills, and drinking fountains. For the sporty, there are parks with tennis courts, basketball courts, bike paths, and jogging paths. There are parks with ponds, near lakes and along rivers. Best of all, they almost always have free parking, restrooms, trees (for shade), and a large grassy area.

With all these conveniences at your disposal, your only limitation is your imagination. You can exercise, meditate or do yoga. You can bring a ball, frisbee or your other favorite toys and enjoy the open grassy areas. You can also bring a book or even your favorite electronic entertainment device and a blanket or chair and relax outside. But my favorite activity is a picnic. Make a sandwich or gather friends and/or family and enjoy a potluck meal. Bring prepared food or bring something to cook on the grill. You have to eat anyway, so I wouldn’t even consider it an extra expense.

Check your local news and you might be lucky enough to find a free event taking place in a park near you.

eEntertainment

The weather is nice and there are beautiful parks that you can visit. Grab a folding chair or blanket and find a tree to sit under or just enjoy a relaxing day on your patio or balcony and pull out your Kindle Reader, iPhone or laptop and enjoy free online entertainment.

Whether you’re looking for a book to read, a game to play, a movie or TV show to watch, or music to listen to, there’s a way to get it for free. Here are some safe sources (no cheats, no tricks):

  • Movies/TV: Network sites (CBS, NBC, Discovery Channel, etc.), Hulu, YouTube, Food Network, Amazon Instant Video
  • Games – MSN Games, Amazon Free Games, Pogo.com, Physics.net Games
  • Music: Amazon Music, Pandora, Playlist.com, YouTube (music videos)
  • Online: Kindle eBooks, BarnesandNoble.com, and a collection of articles through sites like CNN.com, Reuters.com, and People.com, to name a few.

Physical games and exercise

Looking for physical activity to release some tension? You already know that there are things like going for a walk or run, or doing calisthenics, mediation or yoga. But another free way for adults and kids to have fun and get their hearts pumping or brains pumping is with games.

There are the good oldies like Simon Says, Capture the Flag, and 3-legged racing, but if you need more ideas for different ages, try the following:
